Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848 -1933)

Louis Comfort Tiffany was an American artist and designer who is best known for his work in stained glass. Tiffany was born in 1848 in New York City, and he began his career as a painter. However, he soon turned to design stained glass windows, lamps, and other objects.

Tiffany’s interest in glassmaking was sparked by a trip to Europe, where he saw the work of English artist John La Farge. Inspired by La Farge’s work, Tiffany decided to experiment with glassmaking techniques.

He developed a unique style that incorporated elements of both painting and sculpture. Tiffany’s stained glass windows were particularly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work was used in a variety of settings, including churches, homes, and public buildings.

Tiffany continued to produce stained glass into the 1930s when he died at the age of 85. Today, his work is highly prized by collectors and can be found in museums around the world.

Clarke’s first major commissions were for St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh and Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. He also designed windows for Westminster Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral, and Edinburgh Cathedral.

His distinctive style, characterized by richly detailed images and bold use of color, quickly gained popularity. In 1919, Clarke founded his own stained glass studio in Dublin, which soon became one of the most successful studios in Ireland.

Harry Clarke died suddenly of pneumonia in 1931 at the age of 42. His untimely death cut short a promising career, but his work continues to be highly regarded by stained glass artists and collectors around the world.
